Buffalo Tour 2004

A Tour of the Great Plains Region of Southwest Oklahoma

October 3rd-8th

My cycling partner and I ventured into southwestern Oklahoma for a week-long tour of the Great Plains Region. This area of Oklahoma features mountains, arid plains, fertile farmland, and a diverse collection of wildlife.

The weather was generally pleasant with high temperatures near 80 during the day and overnight lows in the mid-50's. We started out in rainy/wet weather three of the six mornings we were on the road.

The roads we traveled were bike friendly and the traffic counts low on our chosen route. I would have no reservations in recommending this particular route to other bike tourists. If you have never taken a self-supported bike tour this would be a good one with which to start.

Towns along the route included Hinton and Red Rock Canyon State Park, Binger (home of Johnny Bench), Anadarko, the Lawton/Ft. Sill Area, Medicine Park, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Great Plains State Park, Hobart, Cordell, and Ft. Cobb State Park.
